Sciatica is not a diagnosis!!

New blog post up now!

New blog available.post up now. Follow link in our bio to the website, then go to our blog page.

Find out what it is, and why it happens. It’s a symptom of a whole bunch of other stuff going on.
Osteopathy looks at why the sciatic nerve becomes Inflamed in the first place. Often the body has been compensating for other mechanical issues and the sciatic nerve gets caught in the middle. This is why you need to get to the cause. It can often be simple to sort out, especially if its relatively new…. Although, never too late to get out of pain and get your body back!!!

Most recent testimonials from our social media channels

I was a complete mess I had been in chronic back pain for over a year. I had had 3 steroid injections, endless physio and nothing had worked. I saw Jo as a last resort after reading comments on St Albans mums page, I was due to have denervation surgery the same week. I never had the surgery. She sorted me out from my funny feet to my pelvis which was out, all the way up my back to my neck and finally head. She has treated the whole of me opposed to just one vertebrae. She has actually cured me and I am now pain free. I cannot say how grateful I am- by treating my physiological problems both my emotional and mental well-being have also improved significantly.

Our Services Include:

Osteopathy

Osteopathy is a highly effective and well proven branch of medical practice which involves the evaluation, diagnosis and treatment of musculoskeletal complaints. As osteopaths we aim to get to the root cause of the issue rather than just treating symptomatically. By looking at why and how the pain or injury got there in the first place, we are more able to prevent it from coming back.

You will receive a full biomechanical assessment at your first appointment, and this will determine the best course of treatment. We use a variety of different techniques, and these are very specific to the individual. These include gentle articulations, soft tissue massage, myofascial release and exercise, as well as manipulations if needed. We are also qualified to use kinesiology taping, sports taping and sports rehab alongside osteopathic treatment.

We also have a specialist paediatric cranial osteopath. Cranial osteopathy is often used by parents for babies and children experiencing abdominal discomfort or excessive crying. Parents often seek cranial osteopathy if their child has plagiocephaly (flat head syndrome), and with various other complaints, for example excessive pain with teething, difficulty opening their bowels and many more conditions. Our cranial Osteopath, Iana, also sees teenagers and adults and can combine structural and cranial osteopathy depending on individual needs. Cranial osteopathy is seen as a calmer and more gentle approach to treatment.

Biomechanical assessment and treatment

A biomechanical assessment helps to resolve the issues which contribute to/cause pain or prevent full recovery from injuries (or injury reoccurrence).

We will do a full biomechanical assessment, analyse the way you move, and then provide prescriptive exercises and treatment, and specialist advice to get you free from pain, and to prevent injuries in the future.

Often this service is best utilised by runners, sports participants, and regular exercisers who have found they keep picking up injuries, and are aware they are not moving as they should, or getting the most from their sport or exercise as they would like.

Book in for an initial osteopathy appointment, or initial sports therapy appointment and your practitioner will be able to assess, treat, and advise you based on your specific needs.

Pilates

Pilates works primarily to improve strength, balance and flexibility; and as such is perfect for injury rehabilitation, injury prevention especially back pain, and also for toning and aesthetic purposes.

We specialise in pilates for pre- and post-natal ladies, and offer a highly effective core restore programme for mums to regain core and pelvic floor function with great success following pregnancy and childbirth (it is never too late!).

Sports massage and injury rehabilitation

Our sports therapist specifically works in a very functional way, to enable full return to sport and daily life, with an aim to prevent future issues and pain returning. The focus is movement and individual specific, so your assessment, treatment and rehabilitation plan will be prescriptive to the individual and your own biomechanics.

We provide a thorough injury and pain rehabilitation programme through exercise and functional training, and this complements osteopathy effectively for a full return to sport and exercise and work, with less chance of pain returning.

I am a fully qualified Osteopath of Masters Level, NASM qualified trainer and Advanced Pilates practitioner, and director of Herts Osteopathy Limited.
I have trained with the National Academy of Sports Medicine and have a first class (hons) degree in Sports and Exercise Science and have been working with fitness, functional training and rehabilitation for around twenty years.

My specialism is in pregnancy and postnatal health and rehabilitation. I am qualified and highly experienced in antenatal and postnatal Osteopathy and can help with numerous pregnancy related issues including SPD and PGP. I am extremely passionate about helping women get out of pain, particularly throughout the pregnancy and postnatal period.
I am qualified in post natal exercise and rehabilitation, and offer a specialised core restore© programme to bring back function postnatally, and to improve posture, abdominal tone and reduce rectus diastasis (where the abdominal muscles split down your midline). So book in for a postnatal assessment and treatment and we can cover these issues with advice on the best way forwards.
I also use kinesiology and myofascial taping which work effectively alongside more traditional osteopathic approaches to ensure a more speedy return to fitness, and to help improve biomechanics and gait.

Hayley Robinson

Senior Associate Osteopath with a sports and rehabilitation focus

I qualified with an integrated Masters of Osteopathy at the British School of Osteopathy. I am fully registered with the General Osteopathic Council (GOsC) and a member of the Institute of Osteopathy. I have been qualified over 5 years, and have lots of experience treating ladies pre- and postnatally. I have been here at Herts Osteopathy for over four years and I am extremely passionate about getting to the root cause of my patients’ issues in order to take the pain away and keep it away.

Prior to my osteopathy degree I studied and gained a diploma in sport and exercise science and this includes sports biomechanics, rehabilitation and nutrition, so I take an exercise and rehab approach to care.

I have a qualification in kinesiology and sports taping and use this alongside my osteopathic and sports and exercise science knowledge to provide an all-round holistic treatment approach.

Alongside osteopathy, I am a qualified pilates matwork instructor with the Australian Physiotherapy and Pilates Institute, which has a sports rehabilitation based approach. This works very effectively alongside osteopathic treatment.

Iana Van Cutsem

Iana Van Cutsem

Associate Osteopath, cranial osteopath and paediatrics

I’m a French osteopath, fully qualified from one of the greatest osteopathic schools in France, Isostéo. Then I practised osteopathy in France and Switzerland for 6 years, treating patients of all ages, before moving to the UK.

As well as structural Osteopathy I am qualified in Cranial, Visceral and Paediatric osteopathy and have a great experience treating pregnant women, babies and children.

I believe that osteopathy can be very helpful to newborns and to get little ones more comfortable with their first steps in life, growing up and developing motor skills well. It can also help new parents getting some support in this very important period of life. I had the chance to work as a volunteer in a maternity and neonatology service and started being amazed by the potential effect of osteopathy on babies. Then I improved my skills by working with experienced osteopaths and some more courses in these areas.

I can also include Cranial osteopathy and visceral manipulation in some of my treatment for adults too where needed, this is a more gentle osteopathic approach that can be particularly helpful for people who prefer a more gentle manipulative treatment.

I provide a lovely longer treatment which is for Mum and baby and means both can be seen together. I have had lots of positive feedback regarding this treatment from both mum and baby’s perspective.

I have a strong natural empathy, I enjoy getting to know and understanding each individual to find a suitable approach that will help the body to restore a healthy balance. I believe in the holistic approach, I like to explore all aspects of health and lifestyle and their impact on the body.
Rupal Pankhania

Rupal Pankhania

Associate Osteopath and chronic pain specialist

I graduated from the prestigious British School of Osteopathy (now the University College of Osteopathy) over a decade ago. Following graduation I worked in the NHS which I really enjoyed and gained a vast experience and knowledge from. This then led me into private practice, and then into starting my own clinic.

Due to my experience I now like to specialise in chronic conditions, particularly arthritic conditions, where I aim to help patients manage their conditions better, and help improve day to day living, as there is so much that can be done from a treatment perspective.

I like treating back pain and associated conditions of the back, arthritic discomfort and headaches, but have a keen interest in treating patients with respiratory difficulties, notably asthmatics. Alongside effective treatment techniques, I like to show them how to breathe effectively and use the abdominal muscles correctly.

I have a hands-on approach to treatment, using traditional structural methods but have found additionally using kinesiology taping can be really effective in a speedy recovery. I really enjoy seeing a wide variety of patients, and love looking at all the different ways I can help them in day to day activities to get back to health. I myself love going to the gym, and understand the importance of exercise and movement in long term pain prevention.

I am registered with the General Osteopathic Council, and a member of the Institute of Osteopathy, and to ensure I treat patients with up to date knowledge of current developments in Osteopathy and Medicine I regularly attend courses and seminars.

When there is a disruption in our health and lifestyle it causes an imbalance which can lead to pain, and I believe I can help by treating and advising patients to restore this with a holistic approach and giving advice to prevent it returning long term.

Lucy Hurley

Lucy Hurley

Soft tissue therapist, injury rehab and yoga practitioner

I am an experienced sports massage and injuries practitioner with a specialism in injury rehabilitation. I am also a fully qualified yoga teacher and offer rehabilitative yoga, which incorporates yoga practice alongside injury prevention and rehabilitation, and restorative yoga for its ability to reduce stress, lengthen and focus, and aid posture. This works really well for those in sedentary office-based jobs where muscles shorten, the spine compresses and the neck and shoulders are placed in a compromised position. This can work effectively alongside a soft tissue based approach to release muscular tensions.

I qualified in sports and remedial massage in 2014 and haven’t looked back since. I am also qualified in personal training and specialise in rehabilitation. Although I provide a hands-on approach, I also like to get people moving off the couch and provide exercise programmes to help enhance the rehabilitation process. I use an ANATOMY IN MOTION approach whilst also incorporating yoga within the treatments as this helps the body to move in a freer, more natural, efficient way.

I am also qualified in pregnancy massage and Thai Yoga massage and kinesiology taping. My treatments are tailored to the specific needs of the individual. I am happy to answer any questions you may have about how I can help you.

I am also very excited to have started my training to become an osteopath, and enjoying studying for my degree at the College of Osteopaths.

Women's Health Therapist, St. Albans, Copied from Google Reviews

As a GP, to suffer from persistent  lower back pain and stiffness provided a valuable but inconvenient insight into what many of my patients go through. Physiotherapy had always helped, but it was only when I saw Jo on the recommendation of a friend that I really understood what was going wrong and how with her help and support we could put things right, and most importantly how  I could stay fit.

She combines knowledge, skill, enthusiasm and a wicked sense of humour all of which combine to achieve great results, that I know has been replicated for other patients. The other great string to Jo’s bow is pilates tuition which complements her osteopathy and is built around the principles of strengthening core muscles as well as being great fun! I have no hesitation in recommending her.
Also have some work done on my lower back as and when needed and find Jo an amazing practitioner who gets the best results in the hour I am there.

In the time I have been seeing the team my pain levels have reduced hugely and I have increased movement. I started coming to the clinic following a car accident many years ago. The team are professional, friendly and extremely knowledgeable. They explain things clearly and concisely so you feel informed. It’s worth every penny to be in less pain and I am really grateful to the team. I would highly recommend to anyone!

Holly

An amazing clinic, my husband could hardly stand up straight or sit down when he went in, he walked out upright, and this was after Jo managed to sort out my lock jaw which all my doctor could recommend was to not eat crusty rolls or apples lol! I highly recommend Jo and her team.

Julie

Well rounded, highly experienced osteopath and pilates coach with tons of charisma. Whilst pregnant I developed severe SPD and girdle pain to the extent where I could hardly walk, get in and out of bed and cars, and suffered daily to do any range of movement.

Jo used her vast experience and skills to rid me of all pain during pregnancy and enable me to have the type of birth I wished for. Jo’s knowledge and recommendations gave me thorough understanding of my postpartum situation and provided me with the right tools and knowledge to become fit and seek further help when needed. Well spirited, knowledgeable, with excellent links in the community I felt that Jo’s healing hands were almost miraculous. Since the birth of my baby I had a major operation and thanks to Pilates with Jo, I feel totally rehabilitated, invigorated and ready to take on all the challenges that a new mum of two has daily.

Try Jo Day for both osteopathy and pilates and you will benefit enormously. I highly recommend Jo’s and Herts Osteopathy services.

Grace

Mum of two, Taken from our Facebook page

Absolutely love 1-1 Pilates with Jo, the focus on getting perfection is brilliant, you are pushed to the limits but feel fantastic at the end, I walk out so perfectly afterwards.
Also have some work done on my lower back as and when needed and find Jo an amazing practitioner who gets the best results in the hour I am there.
Jean

I was recommended to Herts Osteopathy by a friend who was very pleased with the treatment she recieved there. I have suffered from various musculoskeletal problems for many years. They include fibromyalgia, bursitis and tendonitis. On my first visit Jo took a very detailed account of my history of symptoms and treatment that I had recieved over the years.I then had a thorough physical examination and then Jo gave me a treatment and before I left Jo worked out an exercise plan for me to do daily in order to assist my progress. Since then I continued to see Jo until she took maternity leave and I steadily progressed and my pain decreased considerably. I then started to see Rebecca at the clinic and immediately felt confident that I was in safe hands with her. She, like Jo , has been very encouraging and positive about my progress which has helped to make me feel more in control. It’s easy to feel disheartened when you have had long term painful conditions but since coming to the clinic and recieving such excellent treatment and advice I now have much less pain and feel a lot more confident in my ability to help myself than I did before.

Pamela

Very impressed.

Hayley is friendly but v professional, and has improved my back no end 🙂
